HOUSE OF NATURE
The House of Nature – Cismar with tens of thousands of individual pieces can be visited since the summer of 1979, the exhibition area is more than 500 square meters. Buildings and collections are privately owned, the care for them is exclusively voluntary. The Haus der Natur – Cismar is also a place of work in the Voluntary Social Year in Culture.
In addition to the usual local and exotic exhibits of a nature museum, such as minerals, fossils, prepared birds and mammals, insects, crustaceans, corals, etc., the House of Nature – Cismar represents a particular specialty: snails and shells (molluscs). The collection of snail and mussel shells is particularly rich in unusual pieces and with more than 4000 exhibited species Germany’s largest “mussel” exhibition. It offers a clear insight into the almost immeasurable variety of this second largest animal tribe with shells ranging in size from a grain of sand to a meter in length in all colors and shapes. Many snails and shells in the House of Nature – Cismar are real rarities and some of them unique in Europe.
